R. Kelly’s attorney Steven Greenberg claims Aaliyah lied about her age and that his client did not know Aaliyah’s real age when they got married back in 1994.

“…my understanding is that she did not claim to be 15, and in order to get married, she had to lie about her age,” said Greenberg in an interview with Linsey Davis on “Good Morning America.”

“And he [R.Kelly] is saying that he had no idea?” Davis asked. “No idea,” Greenberg confirmed.

Kelly’s defense attorney also made a reference to Elvis Presley marrying his fiancée Priscilla when she was 15. He denies that R. Kelly had a sexual relationship with anyone under the age of consent.

This comes three days after TMZ reported that the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office decided to open an investigation against R. Kelly. Some would say the police were pushed to investigate after the premiere of the six-episode documentary “Surviving R. Kelly.” Investigators have been contacting survivors featured in the documentary including Asante McGee, one of the women who allegedly escaped R. Kelly’s home in Atlanta. The documentary has sparked conversations online and abroad about the alleged abuse suffered at the hands of the R&B singer. R. Kelly has continued to deny all of the allegations. He plans to “sue everybody” and claims to “not know half” of the people in the documentary.

Greenberg’s comments also come the day after R. Kelly’s daughter Buku Abi, formerly known as Joann Kelly, spoke out for the first time condemning her father. She does not have a relationship with her father.

“The same monster you all confronting me about is my father,” Buku Abi wrote on her Instagram story. “I am well aware of who and what he is. I grew up in that house.”
